The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is joining the North Carolina Department of Revenue to encourage families with children who have not already received $335 in coronavirus relief funding to apply for a payment before the May 31, 2021 deadline.
Most North Carolina families with children received an automatic $335 payment last fall through the 2020 NC Extra Credit Grant program to help with virtual schooling and childcare costs. The relief payments are for individuals with a dependent child who was 16 or younger at the end of 2019.
In February, the Extra Credit Grant program deadline was extended to May 31, 2021, to allow eligible individuals who have NOT received the $335 grant to apply. Those who have already received the $335 grant are not eligible to re-apply.
People who did not file a 2019 state tax return because their gross income for 2019 did not exceed the state’s filing requirements for their filing status (generally $10,000 per year if single and $20,000 per year if married) may still be eligible for the $335 to support their family’s virtual learning and childcare needs. Eligible families should take action and apply online or by mail before May 31.
